Pixie Lott – Turn It Up

Pixie Lott wasn’t someone who grabbed our attention as being anything terribly exciting or different to a lot of the Amy Winehouse-lite types but this album was a nice surprise. Instead of harking back earnestly to the soul heritage and the sixties it harks back to a lot of different songs from the past two years, a melting pot of the best bits of 2007/8 rehashed. It isn’t all about ‘the voice’, the songs are very good as well.
Boys and Girls wouldn’t sound out of place in a High School Musical film and has a Shut Up and Drive style chorus. Here We Go Again, produced by Red One, is the album highlight. It’s a celebration of being young and saying yes to everything because you “Never want to say I-I wish that I’d been there”. So there’s a lot of ‘the fun of tonight is worth the pain of the hangover tomorrow’ action and the chorus of “I don’t care about tomorrow-oh-oh-oh/Here we go again” is amazing. Cry Me Out, the next single is good as well and is clearly the song that’s meant to show off her voice.
There are some ropey tracks that are R&B at its most Rubbish and Bland that don’t sit right. We’re not sure why unambitious pop albums always have such rubbish filler ballads especially as they don’t showcase her voice any better than the upbeat songs but overall the album is fun and ticks the right boxes for children and tweens. As for the rest of you, we’d recommend you download the songs mentioned above. They’re bloody good.
