Marina and the Diamonds – Mowgli’s Road

November 2, 2009

Mowgli’s Road is Marina and the Diamonds’ first single on a major label and a big step towards being a major amazingly famous pop star. It was first released on Neon Gold, a boutique label that everyone on the internet have made their mind up about and will either be hopping up and down with excitement or rolling their eyes in disgust every time they see it mentioned by now, as a B-side to Obsessions back in February.

The video is brilliant. Marina has the usual demure but quirky look going on, looking pretty in a natural way but suddenly she has bouncy accordion legs, you know, that kind of thing. We know you all must be tired of the ‘bouncy accordion legs’ look by now but Marina pulls it off.

Mowgli’s Road is the bounciest, most instant and accessible Marina track we’ve heard.  It’s a song about the music business and having “one dream on repeat” and “I’ll do as I am told/ I don’t know (don’t know-know-know)/ Whoooo I want to be” all smattered with shrieks of “Cuckoo!”s. The lyrics in all of Marina’s songs are brilliant.

Marina sits on a fence between alternative and mainstream and it all feels pretty authentic which is great. Any hipster element that might irk people is outbalanced by a mainstream influence and shedloads of talent. As annoying as hype and lists and tips for who’s going to be ‘big’ soon are (as everyone is backed by someone) Marina is someone we can say that whatever happens with her becoming a megafamous pop star or if no one writes about her again we’re confident about the album being good and that’s an exciting prospect for February 2010 when the debut album “(Insert Diamond-based pun here)” will be released.

Hear it here.
