Monarchy

December 9, 2009

Pop stars move in mysterious ways as the old saying goes and people like a bit of a mystery. Take Olly from X Factor for example. His moves are somewhere between dad dancing and someone having a fit. Why he does this is a mystery but people seem to like it and it’s become his ‘thing’. Monarchy’s mysterious ‘thing’ that people seem to like is that nobody knows who they are, except for people ‘in the know’ obviously because that’s what these mysterious people ‘in the know’ do, they know stuff. People don’t seem to like them as much.

Anyway, Monarchy are part of the whole Neon Gold thing and they’ve remixed songs by Penguin Prison and Fyfe Dangerfield off of Guillemots and they are extremely good. They’ve also got two of their own songs ‘Gold in the Fire’ and ‘Black The Colour of My Heart’. Gold in the Fire is warm, fuzzy and falsetto-led with lovely spooksome “aaah” noises in the background. Black, The Colour of My Heart fits in well with good Hot Chip and Scissor Sisters ballads that feature the piano. The singer has a similar tone to his voice to Brandon Flowers from The Killers. The best bit of the song is “Black has always been the colour of my heart THE COLOUR OF MY HEART”.

Apparently their true identities will be revealed in January which means that there could be a lot of red faces if it turns out they’re Mika and Scouting For Girls and everyone will try and turn around and say that they were joking about the songs being good. This probably isn’t true or ‘those’ ‘in the know’ wouldn’t be going on about them but whoever they are, for now, let’s look forward to more songs by them and savour the mystery while it lasts.
