New Noise: 2010

January 1, 2010

PRESENTS:

So here we have IT. A list. ‘THE’ list. We didn’t make a list of the best singles or albums of the past year, or past decade, because we don’t look back. We look forward. We push boundaries. We break the mould. Walls? We crash through them like Jackie Chan or Sam and Mark on Hole in The Wall. Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me.

This is a list of people we like at the moment and we hope we’ll hear more great stuff from in 2010.

Chew Fu

After providing us with some great ‘refixes’, as he calls them, for ages now, Chew Fu is finally getting some more recognition from the mainstream with his terrific refix of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance featuring on The Perez Hilton earlier in the year and ‘Take That’, the new Wiley song he’s ‘provided beats’ for, officially known as Wiley – Take That (feat. Chew Fu), has been A listed on Radio 1. He will be refixing Gaga’s next single Telephone featuring Beyonce and Rihanna’s Rated R in the near future

Daisy Dares You

“Take off/ take off/ Daisy’s ‘bout to take off” Chipmunk sings on 16 year old Daisy’s first single Number One Enemy and it looks like he’s not wrong. Her songs are bouncy guitar pop full of teen angst but she stresses that the subject of her songs are not boys. Number One Enemy, a catchy song about wanting to make up with someone, is sure to be a hit and with an inclusion on the BBC Sound of 2010 list and a collaboration with one of the most popular teen acts of the last year it looks like many expect a lot from Daisy.

Our review of Number One Enemy (feat. Chipmunk).

DollFace

Ex-The Silhouettes singer DollFace has been showing off some great electro pop songs on her MySpace. Best of all is Ms Jamaica, with Red One influence and the bold delivery of the line “If you like the spicy flavour mix it up with Miss Jamaica” which is stupidly catchy. She’s writing with Biff Stannard (Kylie, Spice Girls) so we can look out for some big pop songs from her in future.

Our review of Ms Jamaica.

Ellie Goulding

With some brilliant demos including Wish I Stayed (‘featuring’ Frankmusik) and Starry Eyed floating around the internet for a while debut taster limited edition etc. etc. single Under The Sheets was released in November and seemed to garner attention from people other than those who copy and paste the Neon Gold blog and have a vote on the Sound of 2010 list. And obviously after being such huge fans of the folktronica scene for so long we’re glad it’s finally paying off and people are taking notice. Or something.

Our review of Under The Sheets.

Grum

With plenty of remixes under his belt including a remix of Bad Romance the best thing we’ve heard from him is his own song Heartbeats. A proper hit-worthy song that showed that if Grum carried on from there we could be hearing some pretty amazing stuff from him.

Marina and the Diamonds

With most of the demos from the tracks on the album on the internet Marina’s fans have been able to ‘be a part of her journey’ as she blogs openly about her hopes and thoughts and have seen her blossom from the person making demos and taking pictures of herself and putting pictures them on MySpace to the reswizzled version and the pretty pop star with the amazing videos. With some absolutely brilliant lyrics and loads of talent her debut album, released in February, looks to be one of the most exciting albums of 2010.

Our reviews of The Outsider and Mowgli’s Road.

Monarchy

Along with Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding and many other good acts, Monarchy are associated with boutique label Neon Gold. For now Monarchy’s identities are a secret which means it’sallabahtdamusicmaaaan. Their songs are warm and fuzzy synth-led affairs with falsetto aplenty. Their remixes of fellow Neon Gold types Penguin Prison and Fyfe Dangerfield off of Guillemots are very good. Apparently they will reveal their identities in 2010.

Our introduction to Monarchy.

Music Go Music

LA band Music Go Music fit in with the ‘obviously pop but with indie qualities to it’ club with Franz Ferdinand and New York Pony Club. Warm In The Shadows, a song that’s nearly ten minutes long but feels like three, was released earlier in the year and is Blondie-influenced brilliance. Their debut album has already been released abroad but is released early 2010 in the UK.

Sky Ferreira

Already labelled an ‘it girl’ by ‘alternative’ fashion magazines 17 year old Sky Ferreira fits in with the usual socialite stereotype but her singing voice has made Michael Jackson cry (because it was so good) and she’s working with big name producers such as Bloodshy & Avant (Britney), Dr Luke (Miley Cyrus) and Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen). She has been putting demos on her MySpace and they all show off her terrific voice and hopefully we’ll be hearing big singles soon.

Unicorn Kid

Building up a devoted following of young ravers 17 year old Unicorn Kid expertises in dancey bleeps with unstoppable tunes such as Lion Hat and Wee Monsters. What makes him stand out is where dance music can often be pretty faceless, he’s not afraid to show personality. His remix of Pet Shop Boys’ Did You See Me Coming introduced him to a wider audience (and we’re sure he introduced a few of his fans to the Pet Shop Boys too).  He supported Pet Shop Boys in Glasgow in December.

As for us, in 2010, let’s just say we’ll be upping our game.
