Gather your pennies together: 04/01/2010
So, which singles are released on this gorgeous Monday morning and which should you bother buying this week?
Cobra Starship – Hot Mess
They’re the ones that aren’t 3OH!3. If you like Cobra Starship you’ll like this. If you don’t then you won’t. It’s not half as good as that other one they did yet it manages to sound exactly the same.
Delphic – Doubt
It’s very good. If Kele Bloc Party sung songs from Coldplay’s X&Y-era in Manchester in the 80s then this song is what you’d ge(Heeey! Liking your stuff. We’d love to get you on board for the write up of Sound of 2011. – BBC)
Iyaz – Replay
Just like everything else at the moment.
Jordin Sparks – Don’t Let It Go To Your Head
This is a cover. The original isn’t great and neither is this but the song itself has a chorus that’s worth covering by someone who can carry it off without sounding so awkward and distant.
The Saturdays – Ego
One of the highlights from the album (which we reviewed last year) about an idiot who “needs to have a sit down with his ego”, hence the name. Watch out for the grittier explicit version where every line ends with “you twat”, “you bastard”, “you fucking dildo” or a variation which adds a sense of realism to the song.
Sidney Samson feat. Wizard Sleeve – Riverside (Let’s Go!)
We ‘reviewed’ the original version a few weeks ago. We don’t like this version. The dance in the video is also wrong.
Simian Mobile Disco – Cruel Intentions (feat. Beth Ditto)
Re-released, B-listed, it’s alright but to be honest you’d be better off randomly choosing a song from the Ministry of Sound: Electronic 80s album.
Verdict: None are completely unlistenable but if we were you we’d go for Delphic, then The Satz, then Cobra Starship (or if you’re going for the Electronic 80s album e-mail us and we’ll send you a list of which to buy in order of preference).
