Marina & The Diamonds – Hollywood

This is mainstream pop at its best with a terrific video to match it. It’s about dreaming the glittering American dream because even the awful bits are better than living a normal, average life. The line about landing in LA and a fat security saying “OH MAI GAWD” whether it’s intentional or not she has never sounded as Welsh as when she sings “Actchewerely my name’s Marina”. The whispery middle eight building up to the chorus is just brilliant. It’s the biggest, most mainstream sounding song we’ve heard from her and no part of it resonates that she’s compromised herself in the process. It’s fast becoming one of our favourite songs by her and we’re so excited about seeing how the album and the year turns out for Marina.
